The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a heartfelt appeal for heightened caution among all road users following the tragic death of a young student in Dreketi. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa expressed his condolences after an eight-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle while unexpectedly crossing the road after getting off a licensed transport carrier.
Preliminary police reports indicated that the impact of the collision was severe. The child was propelled about 24 meters from the point of collision, ultimately landing on the road. Mr. Rokosawa emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Every life lost on our roads is one too many. We must all play our part in preventing such tragedies.”
In light of this incident, which echoes other recent road safety concerns, the LTA is reiterating the importance of vigilance especially around areas frequented by children. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and exercise caution in school zones and other high-risk areas. The call for heightened awareness is not only directed at drivers but also extends to pedestrians and caregivers. Parents and guardians are encouraged to educate and supervise children about the importance of road safety.
This tragic accident is compounded by the fact that the current road death toll has seen a significant decrease, with three fatalities reported so far this year compared to a previous tragic tally of 15 during the same period last year. This statistic highlights the need for continued vigilance and commitment to road safety practices.
There is hope that through communities working together to promote awareness of road safety, adherence to guidelines can lead to safer conditions, particularly for the most vulnerable members of society—our children. By fostering a culture of responsibility and respect on the roads, it is possible to mitigate risks and prevent further tragedies.
