The National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a crucial appeal to the public, emphasizing the importance of peacefully resolving disputes rather than resorting to destructive actions that can lead to tragic outcomes. This message follows a devastating incident in the Central-Eastern Division last weekend, where two separate fires were reported, one resulting in the loss of a woman’s life in her 30s.
Puamau Sowane, CEO of the NFA, stressed, “We have seen similar tragic instances this year where conflicts escalated into actions with irreversible consequences. We urge everyone to think twice and seek peaceful resolutions.” He expressed condolences to the family affected by the recent fire and reiterated the authority’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.
Notably, NFA data reveals that since 2016, the average number of fire-related fatalities stands at six annually, with last year and 2018 marking the years with the lowest fatalities at just three each. “Our mission is to save lives,” Sowane stated, stressing the crucial role that community cooperation plays in achieving this goal. Residents are encouraged to report fires immediately to enable timely assistance, as swift action can indeed save lives and property.
Similar fires earlier in the year have highlighted an ongoing trend where domestic conflicts escalate tragically. A recent incident at the Veiquwawa settlement involved a fire that stemmed from a domestic dispute, where a father managed to save his children but tragically lost his wife while trying to rescue her. These occurrences underscore the pressing need for greater awareness around family harmony and the responsible management of disputes.
As communities grapple with these challenging circumstances, there’s hope that the collective response to raise awareness about fire safety and mental health can foster a more supportive environment. By prioritizing peaceful conflict resolution and being vigilant about fire safety, residents can work towards avoiding such heart-wrenching tragedies in the future.
