Dorsami Naidu, a well-known lawyer in Nadi, has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to make efforts to prevent measles from entering Fiji. He highlights the growing concern over infectious disease outbreaks in key tourist markets like Australia and New Zealand, suggesting that the country might struggle to withstand another viral attack.

Naidu emphasizes the importance of conducting border screenings for measles, particularly for travelers arriving from these affected regions. He acknowledges that while the Ministry of Health has implemented immunization initiatives, no population can be completely immune to infectious diseases. He recalls previous reported cases of measles in Fiji during 2019 and 2021, reinforcing the potential risk posed by outbreaks in neighboring countries.

Despite Fiji’s relatively high immunization rates against measles, Mr. Naidu calls for more proactive measures from the government to safeguard against the importation of diseases. He expresses concern not only for public health but also for Fiji’s fragile economy, emphasizing that it could ill afford another health crisis, especially amid uncertainty regarding the threat posed by HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus).

He appeals to the Prime Minister to prompt an urgent Cabinet meeting to discuss the risks associated with HMPV and measles, prioritizing the safety of citizens. As of now, inquiries sent to the Prime Minister have not received a response.

This call to action highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness in public health policies, especially in light of global health challenges. By addressing these concerns with urgency and attention, the Fijian government may strengthen its defenses against infectious diseases while protecting its economy and its people.

In summary, the situation underscores a critical need for proactive public health measures and collaboration between government officials and health authorities. It serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of public health and economic stability, urging a comprehensive approach to managing health risks.
