Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has called for urgent action regarding the development of a port of entry in Labasa, located in Vanua Levu. He referenced a previous feasibility study conducted on the project, which has seen little progress since its conclusion. “There were considerations for Malau and the current roll-on, roll-off facility in Nabouwalu,” he noted, asking, “When, how, and what will it take to turn these plans into reality?”

Seruiratu emphasized the importance of establishing a well-functioning port as a means to enhance trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region, insisting that it must be integrated into a comprehensive, long-term development plan. “The development of the port of entry is key to unlocking the region’s economic potential. We can’t keep delaying progress on such crucial infrastructure projects,” he stated.

His statements echo sentiments expressed by local leaders and community members, such as paramount chief Ratu Jone Qomate, who has also voiced disappointment over unmet promises regarding the port. Previously, Ratu Jone highlighted the significant impact a functional port could have on Labasa’s economic growth, while government officials have pointed to ongoing infrastructure focus elsewhere. Deputy Prime Minister manoa Kamikamica acknowledged the importance of the matter but mentioned current prioritization of urgent needs, which has delayed potential advancement for the port project.

Despite these delays, there is a sense of cautious optimism for the future. Local stakeholders and community members are hopeful that the current government will finally take meaningful steps to realize the long-awaited port project, as discussions and potential funding options, including through the World Bank, become more prevalent.

Collectively, this emerging dialogue around the port is indicative of a growing recognition of the need for strategic infrastructure development that can significantly benefit the Labasa community, potentially paving the way for a more prosperous future built on expanded economic opportunities.
