The government has been called upon to support Fijians residing in the most remote islands. Opposition MP and former Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau emphasized that many isolated island communities rely on resources generated by the government.
He highlighted areas such as Yanuca, situated between Rabi and Taveuni, and Ono-i-Lau, which includes the southernmost island of Vatoa, noting their significant lack of resources. Koroilavesau pointed out the challenges in agriculture, stating that many of these islands lack suitable land for cultivation, while forestry efforts are hindered by rocky terrain.
He urged the government to allocate resources and aid to the Fisheries Minister in order to assist these isolated communities, stressing that their primary source of income comes from the sea.
