Urgent Call for Graduate Orientation in Fiji’s Education Sector

All new graduates should undergo proper orientation conducted by the Ministry of Education, according to Johnson Rura, president of the Fiji Head Teachers Association. Speaking at the 41st Fiji Head Teachers Association Conference in Nadi, Rura emphasized the importance of certification for new graduates prior to their assignments to schools.

He stated, “They need to understand the expectations set by schools.” Additionally, Rura inquired about potential incentives for teachers who dedicate their time and resources to extracurricular activities.

Rura also brought attention to the challenges surrounding the transfer of teachers, particularly secondary graduates, who are moved out of primary schools when positions become available in secondary education. He suggested that school heads should be notified about replacements for teachers before any transfers take place.

In response, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the various concerns raised by Rura. He expressed hope that the staff from headquarters present at the conference were taking notes to address the issues raised effectively.
