A prominent academic has voiced the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the education system, advocating for the formation of an Education Commission to spearhead the initiative. Dr. Ganesh Chand, chair of the Polytech Council, emphasized that the current method of soliciting public opinions is insufficient and that a dedicated group of experts should be responsible for reviewing all aspects of education, from early childhood through to tertiary levels.

Dr. Chand highlighted that the last Education Commission convened in 2000, suggesting that a new body is essential to address the evolving educational landscape and provide informed recommendations to the government. “You need experts to come and give a recommendation to government,” he stated, underscoring the necessity for technical expertise and in-depth analysis in formulating reforms.

This call to action aligns with recent discussions led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who has also expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of the education system following disappointing Year 8 Examination results. He has called for a collaborative approach among stakeholders to reflect on their roles in improving academic outcomes. In addition, officials have pointed to features such as the “no-repeat” policy as potentially hindering student learning and progression, indicating a need for a more rigorous assessment framework.

Furthermore, the government is currently conducting a thorough review of significant education laws, including the Education Act of 1966, with aims to modernize the educational landscape and enhance student welfare. This initiative reflects a proactive stance on addressing current educational challenges, ensuring the system meets the needs of today’s students and prepares them for future complexities in the workforce driven by rapid technological advancements.

There is an opportunity for constructive change as stakeholders at various levels engage in shaping a more effective educational paradigm. Collaboration among educators, policymakers, and the community can lead to a more robust system that not only addresses existing shortcomings but also aspires to elevate educational standards for generations to come.
