The neglect of children’s welfare can lead to tragic consequences, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew. His comments come in the wake of an incident involving a toddler found wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Two women discovered the child and brought him to a nearby police station.
ACP Chew stated that the police are dedicated to investigating instances of child neglect. He urged the public to help identify the child’s parents or guardians following a post on the police’s official Facebook page, which eventually led to the toddler being reunited with his family.
He emphasized that the police will consider elements of negligence that could potentially result in legal charges against parents or guardians involved in such incidents. “This is not the first such case we have encountered,” ACP Chew said, expressing concern over the issue. Past cases have included tragedies such as drowning, burns, and fatal accidents, all attributed to insufficient supervision or neglect from caregivers.
He implored parents and guardians to be vigilant, as children are naturally curious and can find themselves in dangerous situations in a matter of seconds.
Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran echoed these sentiments, urging all caregivers to prioritize the welfare of children. Her remarks followed a tragic incident last Monday in which a one-year-old boy died in Naitonitoni, Navua, after being struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by a 23-year-old man. The child had reportedly left home unnoticed and wandered onto the road.
Minister Kiran highlighted the urgency of addressing child protection issues, acknowledging the challenges of finding childcare in urban areas. She emphasized the importance of providing the necessary support to prevent neglect and protect vulnerable lives.
