Urgent Call for Child Safety as Neglect Cases Rise

Concerns are growing over children’s safety after a recent incident where a toddler was found wandering alone by Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare to prevent tragedies.

The child was taken to a nearby police station by two women, and police later appealed to the public on social media to help locate the child’s parents or guardians. Fortunately, the toddler was reunited with his family after the appeal gained traction online.

ACP Chew stated that the police are committed to investigating instances of child neglect, indicating that legal action against parents and guardians could be pursued if negligence is found. This incident is not isolated; similar cases have occurred in the past, including instances where children suffered fatal accidents due to inadequate supervision.

Chew stressed the need for vigilance among parents and guardians, noting that moments of inattention can lead to tragic outcomes, as children are naturally curious and can easily find themselves in dangerous situations.

In a related comment, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran urged parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts and prioritize their safety. She highlighted the tragic death of a one-year-old boy in Naitonitoni, who was hit by a vehicle after leaving home unnoticed, underscoring the critical need for better child protection measures. Kiran acknowledged the challenges parents face, especially in urban areas, but emphasized the availability of support systems to help prevent neglect and ensure children’s safety.
