The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, has expressed hope that the Ministry of Health will address the ongoing issues with the non-functional X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. For over two months, the vital equipment has been out of service, after initially being only partially operational since July of the previous year.
Pillay emphasized the readiness of the local business community to help, but noted that any assistance must come through directives from the ministry’s headquarters. Patients are being redirected to Zens Medical Centre for X-rays—a situation that is not only inconvenient but raises concerns about access to urgent care. One patient, Ilisapeci Bola, highlighted the challenges faced by individuals needing immediate medical attention, particularly for those coming from remote areas.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink inspected the X-ray machine and determined that it requires a software upgrade. He underscored the urgency of having the machine functional, given the potential for emergencies such as accidents after hours when alternative options may be limited. In a proactive move, Nunnink has offered to cover the repair costs, with a qualified local engineer poised to complete the job swiftly.
Despite the local community’s willingness to assist, communication with health authorities has been frustrating. Efforts to contact officials regarding the matter have been met with delays as some individuals are reportedly on annual leave. An email seeking clarification from the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, was sent on December 30, but a response has not yet been received.
In the recent 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated significant resources for health facility upgrades, which includes funding for the refurbishment of the Savusavu health center. However, the predicament of the X-ray machine continues to persist without a resolution.
This situation highlights not only the challenges facing health services in Savusavu but also the supportive spirit of the local business community. With continued advocacy and collaboration between businesses and health officials, there is hope for a timely resolution that will enhance medical services and safety in the region.
It is crucial that the Ministry of Health prioritizes such essential equipment in their operational agenda, especially given the investment made in health facilities nationwide. Prompt action can ensure that residents receive the medical attention they need when they need it most.
