The situation surrounding HIV in Fiji was highlighted by Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Ministry of Health’s chief medical adviser, during a press conference held by the Fijian Media Association in Suva. Dr. Cikamatana emphasized the urgent need for enhanced intelligence gathering to better understand the transmission of HIV, particularly in relation to phenomena such as “bluetoothing.” This emerging issue is marked by its sensitivity and requires open conversations for effective awareness.

Dr. Cikamatana called on the media to engage in more investigative journalism about these transmission methods, noting that many users often withhold critical information when they seek medical help. She welcomed collaborative partnerships with the media to boost information dissemination regarding the HIV outbreak, which has recently gained attention due to alarming statistics.

Earlier reports have indicated that significant portions of the population affected by HIV are within the iTaukei community, with rising diagnoses particularly among men. Dr. Cikamatana’s remarks align with the goal of enhancing public understanding of HIV, especially in the context of needle sharing among drug users, which has been linked to increases in HIV transmission.

The ministry acknowledged the need for greater collaboration among all stakeholders, stating, “We all need to work together for today and for our future.” Dr. Cikamatana encouraged respectful treatment of those living with HIV and underscored the importance of sharing factual and researched information to combat stigma and discrimination.

The discussions took place during a media event co-organized by the Australian High Commission, focusing on a partnership approach to health and HIV response. This highlights an increasing commitment to addressing sensitive health issues collaboratively and positively, aimed at fostering a more informed and supportive community.

The proactive measures being suggested and implemented showcase a hopeful future for public health in Fiji. By promoting understanding and empathy, there is a potential pathway towards managing and eventually reducing the prevalence of HIV within the community through education and awareness initiatives.
