The Education, Heritage and Arts Minister, Aseri Radrodro, has expressed significant concern regarding an incomplete building at Nabua Secondary School, emphasizing that it presents a serious occupational health and safety issue. This concern has been heightened by a recent fire incident at John Wesley College, prompting the Minister to take action to prevent similar occurrences at other schools in Fiji facing comparable challenges.
The construction of the building in question was stalled due to a change in management, but the Ministry is committed to collaborating with the school board and the newly appointed management to expedite its completion. Minister Radrodro explained that initial findings indicate the building, constructed under the previous management, was left unfinished. The Ministry is prepared to assist in this matter; however, he noted that the school must formally request help through the standard channels provided by the Ministry of Education.
Despite these challenges, Minister Radrodro reassured that examinations at John Wesley College will proceed as planned. He confirmed that the affected building, currently serving as a venue for TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programs, will still be utilized for classrooms and assessments, although there may be necessary adjustments to internal examination schedules after discussions with school officials.
This proactive approach from the Minister not only aims to enhance safety for students but also underscores the government’s commitment to supporting education institutions in their operational needs. With collaboration between the Ministry and school management, there is hope for a swift resolution to these building issues, ensuring that students can continue their education in a safe and conducive environment.
Overall, while there are immediate concerns regarding infrastructure at schools, the government’s willingness to address these issues collaboratively presents a positive outlook for the future of educational facilities in Fiji.
