The government is taking steps to relocate 36 families from the Jittu squatter settlement in Raiwaqa, Suva, to improved modern housing. Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo shared these plans this week, highlighting the initiative as part of a broader strategy to eliminate informal settlements within urban boundaries.
Mr. Vosarogo emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing living conditions for families within squatter settlements. He stated, “There should be no squatter settlements within town or city boundaries,” and affirmed the need for a structured relocation plan to achieve this goal.
As part of these efforts, Jittu Estate, home to over a thousand families, is set for redevelopment into contemporary housing facilities. The minister noted the necessity of collaboration with other government sectors, especially the Ministry for Housing and Local Government, to ensure the project’s success.
The plan will not only involve relocation but will aim to improve living conditions significantly by providing essential infrastructure such as clean water, electricity, and waste management. Mr. Vosarogo acknowledged the challenges of this undertaking but emphasized that early communication with affected families is vital for a smooth transition.
He mentioned that conversations are already underway with the residents of Jittu to discuss the advantages of enhancing their standard of living.
This initiative reflects a positive shift towards addressing housing issues in urban areas, paving the way for better living conditions and opportunities for those currently residing in inadequate circumstances. With concerted efforts, there is hope for a brighter future for these families.
