The government has unveiled plans to relocate 36 families from the Jittu squatter settlement in Raiwaqa, Suva, to modern housing facilities. Minister for Lands, Filimoni Vosarogo, announced this initiative yesterday as part of broader efforts to tackle the issue of informal settlements within urban boundaries.

Mr. Vosarogo stated that this relocation initiative aligns with the Ministry of Lands’ goal to phase out squatter settlements from urban areas and replace them with contemporary housing. He emphasized that improving the quality of life in these settlements is of utmost importance, with plans in place to ensure access to essential infrastructure such as water, electricity, and waste management for all relocated families.

“There should be no squatter settlements within town or city boundaries,” he remarked, underlining the need for a cohesive approach to relocation. The minister also highlighted the necessity of collaboration with other ministries, including Finance and Housing, to ensure the success of the initiative. While some families may be moved to different areas, the main objective remains focused on upgrading living conditions.

Mr. Vosarogo acknowledged that engaging with the community is crucial for implementing these changes smoothly. “It takes time, effort, and it’s challenging,” he noted, but reiterated the importance of starting conversations with those affected to socialize the need for improved living standards.

As Jittu Estate is home to over a thousand families and is targeted for comprehensive redevelopment, this initiative could serve as a foundation for positive change within urban housing in Fiji, setting an example for other areas facing similar challenges.

This effort reflects a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable communities, and provides hope for more sustainable urban development in the future. It represents a significant step towards improving living conditions and making urban areas more livable for everyone.
