Knight’s Choice, the rank outsider, claimed victory in the 164th edition of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday, sprinting down the final stretch to narrowly surpass Warp Speed in a dramatic photo finish. Okita Soushi secured the third position in the race.
Ridden by Robbie Dolan and carrying 51.5 kg over the demanding two-mile handicap, Knight’s Choice’s win marks the second Melbourne Cup triumph for co-trainer Sheila Laxon, who previously led Ethereal to victory in 2001.
“I can’t believe it, I’m dreaming,” exclaimed a visibly emotional Dolan following the unexpected triumph of the 80/1 shot on a stunning afternoon. He elaborated, “I thought my best chance was to ensure he could handle the distance, and thankfully, he demonstrated his remarkable speed and ability on a good track, proving the doubters wrong.”
The race field was narrowed to 23 contenders after stewards scratched Athabascan, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, due to a heart issue.
This year’s Melbourne Cup showcased an unexpected champion, reflecting the unpredictable nature of horse racing and the joy of achieving the seemingly impossible. It serves as a reminder that underdogs can shine brightly, inspiring fans and participants alike in the world of sports.
