Breast cancer is more than just a statistic; behind each number lies a story that deeply affects families, friends, and communities, according to former tertiary lecturer Akosita Toga.
Ms. Toga made these remarks during a speech at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education on Friday, as part of the institution’s Picktober and Diwali celebrations.
She emphasized that no one faces breast cancer alone, urging nursing students and staff to promote the various breast health care services available in Fiji. “Breast cancer impacts countless lives—our mothers, sisters, friends, and even ourselves. No one should undergo the fight against cancer in solitude,” Ms. Toga stated.
She highlighted the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment as crucial elements in preventing breast cancer, stressing the necessity for students to advocate for awareness.
Globally, Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is observed every October to promote understanding and awareness about breast cancer. The month serves to underline the significance of early detection, timely diagnosis, comprehensive treatments, and the support needed for individuals battling cancer.
