Unveiling the Reality: Teenage Marriages in Rural Communities

Teenagers are getting married in rural communities, raising concerns from the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS). Executive Director Vani Catanasiga highlighted this issue during a workshop on Trafficking in Persons, facilitated by the Pacific Island News Association and The Asia Foundation. Catanasiga noted that several such “marriages” have been reported to FCOSS.

She clarified that these unions are not legally recognized marriages. Many rural communities are unaware that marrying under the age of 18 is illegal. Catanasiga explained that some people do not fully understand what trafficking involves.

In some cases, when the concept of trafficking was explained to them, community members realized that such activities were indeed occurring. This lack of awareness has led to the normalization of young marriages in these areas. Young women, particularly high school students, might receive gifts from individuals like rural service vehicle providers, contributing to these unions.

Catanasiga pointed out that areas with poor infrastructure are particularly vulnerable. Limited access to resources can give certain individuals undue influence and power, which they exploit in harmful ways. Women have shared their stories with FCOSS but have expressed concerns about media coverage, fearing bullying and backlash.
