Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of Waste Recyclers Fiji and founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, delivered a heartfelt tribute to his deceased mother and to those who bravely confront challenges while advocating for their rights during the 2024 Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) Awards in Sydney. As a tribute, he donned a shawl that was much more than a mere garment; it encapsulated a profound narrative and significant symbolism.

Crafted by Faruna Shehnaaz, the talented owner of Saniz Fashion in Nakasi, the shawl reflects Fiji’s vibrant multiracial heritage. It features a unique combination of materials, merging an old sari that belonged to Amitesh’s mother, Pushpa Wati Deo, with traditional iTaukei tapa. The sari stands as a testament to resilience and the fight for justice faced by marginalized communities in Fiji, an ethos that Pushpa embodied throughout her life as a domestic violence survivor and advocate for equality.

Deo explained that the incorporation of the iTaukei tapa not only highlights the rich tapestry of Fijian culture but also symbolizes the coexistence of its diverse communities. “Together, these elements created a shawl that serves as a metaphor for the recycling sector in Fiji – resilient, transformative, and deeply rooted in collaboration,” he remarked. He emphasized that this narrative goes beyond the shawl itself; it embodies values of resilience, justice, and unity, which are central to both Waste Recyclers Fiji and the Pacific Recycling Foundation.

In addition to this poignant tribute, Waste Recyclers Fiji was nominated for the Improved Recycling System Award. The event was not only a recognition of sustainable practices but also an opportunity to celebrate Fiji’s authentic essence—its rich culture, resilience, and diversity. This highlights a hopeful future where community values and sustainable initiatives intersect, paving the way for meaningful change and continued advocacy for environmental and social justice.
