Unsettled Weather in Fiji Triggers Flood Watch Across Islands

The Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a renewed heavy rain alert at 10:30 a.m. today, cautioning that unstable weather is anticipated to continue across various parts of the country over the coming days. This alert remains in effect for the Northern Division and Northern Lau, and has now been expanded to include Eastern Viti Levu, the Yasawa and Lomaiviti groups, as well as the remainder of the Lau group.

The centre reports that a trough of low pressure situated to the northeast of Fiji is gradually moving southward, significantly impacting local weather patterns for the next few days. Residents in the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti can expect occasional showers, which are predicted to escalate into more consistent rain beginning tonight.

For Eastern Viti Levu, including areas such as Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, and Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra, as well as the Yasawa group, cloudy weather along with isolated showers is anticipated, transitioning to more frequent and heavier rainfall later this evening.

Authorities are issuing warnings about the potential for flash flooding in low-lying regions, informal settlements, and other vulnerable areas, which could disrupt traffic. Drivers are advised to remain vigilant as slick roads may create hazardous conditions, raising the risk of accidents and causing travel delays, particularly in regions with inadequate drainage.

As the community prepares for these weather challenges, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and preparedness necessary to navigate such adverse conditions, with hopes that everyone will stay safe and take necessary precautions during this unstable weather period.
