The Ministry of Education has recognized that poor school infrastructure hampers the ability of educational institutions to meet Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted a concerning incident involving Nabua Primary School, where students are exposed to hazardous conditions.
Mr. Radrodro noted that initial assessments revealed ongoing issues with the school’s structure, which was left incomplete by the former management. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to work with the new management to ensure the building is properly completed. He also encouraged the management to formally request assistance from the government through the Ministry of Education if needed.
Nabua Primary School has been identified as having several urgent safety concerns, including classrooms with rusted roofs and windows that pose safety risks due to missing blades, allowing easy access for students to exit.
The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, also addressed the OHS concerns and confirmed that a team visited the school on November 4. A report regarding the safety conditions was expected to be released shortly afterward, although the ministry had not provided updates despite inquiries.
This situation sheds light on the critical need for improved infrastructure in schools to ensure a safe learning environment for students. The proactive approach from the Ministry of Education and the commitment of government officials illustrate a determination to resolve these issues. By addressing these infrastructure problems, the government can foster a healthier and safer educational atmosphere, ultimately benefiting the students and the community at large.
In essence, although challenges remain, the ongoing dialogue and reports indicating official visits point towards a hopeful resolution, and there is an opportunity for substantial improvement in the educational infrastructure that can enhance student safety.
