The Consumer Council of Fiji is raising serious concerns about the rising trend of unregulated and unsafe dental procedures being carried out by individuals lacking proper training. This alarming situation poses substantial health risks to the public.
Seema Shandil, the Council’s CEO, noted that although no formal complaints have been filed, investigations have uncovered vendors offering dental jewelry applications for as little as $5. These procedures are occurring informally in market stalls, which raises significant safety and health concerns.
Shandil warned about the potential dangers associated with the materials and adhesives used in these procedures, which could be harmful to consumers. She emphasized that unregulated and unsanitary practices could potentially expose individuals to severe risks, ranging from infectious diseases to toxic reactions and even long-term health complications.
In light of these risks, Shandil strongly advised consumers against seeking out these services, highlighting the potentially life-threatening consequences. She encouraged anyone who has faced issues or has concerns about such practices to report them to the National Consumer Helpline at 155. Complaints will be forwarded to the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for further investigation and appropriate actions to be taken.
Additionally, Shandil issued a stern warning to traders engaged in these unlawful practices, stating that they are compromising public health and safety. She called for an immediate halt to their activities.
