On October 3, 1992, an unsettling scene unfolded at the National Gymnasium when boxing fans clashed with police, witnessed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The chaos erupted following a match between local boxer Jo Ravudi and Tongan opponent Sione Talia’uli, which ended with Ravudi declared the winner by unanimous points decision.
Approximately 50 members of the crowd, reportedly hailing from Naitasiri, confronted law enforcement agents who were attempting to manage the crowd’s excitement. The tumultuous atmosphere led to several arrests, with two individuals taken into custody expected to appear in court shortly after. Officer Simione Rarasea was knocked unconscious during the altercation and treated for a slight concussion, while four additional officers suffered minor injuries.
Mumtaz Ali, secretary of the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji, condemned the violence, labeling it the most severe incident in the nation’s boxing history. He expressed deep concern over how this event tarnished Fiji’s image, particularly in the sports arena, emphasizing that such behavior was unprecedented in his extensive 35-year involvement in boxing.
The chaos was reminiscent of a similar incident just months prior, illustrating a troubling pattern among some fans, particularly Ravudi’s supporters. Inspector Armogam Reddy confirmed that the initial troublemakers had been identified and arrested, but the situation escalated rapidly as more fans joined in, leading to a hostile environment where officers struggled to regain control.
Despite the disorder, Prime Minister Rabuka remained composed and even presented the championship belt to Ravudi following the bout. This moment indicates resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
While this incident is regrettable, it highlights the passionate engagement of boxing fans and the need for better crowd management at sporting events in the future. With stronger measures and measures for fan education on proper conduct, there is hope that future boxing events will remain safe and enjoyable for all involved.
