The investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider is nearing completion, as all local witnesses involved in the fight have been interviewed. Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru confirmed that only six individuals based overseas remain to be questioned, and the investigation is expected to wrap up this week.
Among those still to be interviewed are key figures in the boxing community, including the director of South Pacific Boxing Promotion, the fight promoter, the IBO Fight Commissioner, the referee, and several international experts. Haider collapsed following his ninth-round technical knockout to Sydney boxer Runqi Zhou on October 26 while competing for the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title. After being taken to Zen’s Medical, he was transferred to Aspen Hospital in Lautoka for head surgery but unfortunately did not recover, passing away on November 10.
