Ratu Aporosa Davelevu, involved in a major drug trafficking case in Legalega, Nadi, asserted in court that he was unaware that the truck he drove contained a consignment of methamphetamine. During his testimony, he recounted how, on December 29, 2023, he was asked by co-accused Justin Ho to drive the vehicle from Denarau to Motorex, supposedly filled with furniture. He was paid $200 for this service, after being approached while visiting Ho’s barbershop for a haircut.

Davelevu strenuously denied any knowledge of illegal activity related to the truck’s contents. When pressed about the situation, he maintained that he had no intention or awareness of transporting drugs. Notably, he revealed a past deportation from Australia in 2017 due to driving offenses, which adds another layer of complexity to his situation.

This trial is part of broader judicial efforts in Fiji to counteract a burgeoning drug crisis, particularly highlighted by the significant seizure of over 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine connected to this case. Earlier testimonies from witnesses have pointed to the organized nature of these operations, accentuating the community’s growing concerns over drug trafficking and its implications for safety and accountability.

As the trial continues, it is clear that the judicial system is committed to addressing such serious crimes and fostering community safety. The courage displayed by witnesses to come forward feeds a collective hope for a just resolution, reinforcing the idea that through legal accountability, the cycle of drug-related crimes can be broken, leading to a more secure and unified society in Fiji.
