Unprecedented Nabua Flood Tests Community Resilience

Residents of the Muslim League settlement in Nabua recounted a harrowing experience from last night’s flash flooding, labeling it as the most terrifying event of their lives. Sunil Kumar, a longtime resident of 18 years, expressed disbelief as the water rose at an alarming rate, turning what initially seemed to be a minor incident into a nightmare. He described the tension felt by his family and neighbors as they prepared for the worst, stating, “I was just thinking the house might get washed away. So we all came out here, my wife and my neighbours… the water level was already six and a half feet.”

Zairak Ali, a 49-year-old lifelong resident, echoed Kumar’s sentiments, noting that this flood has reached unprecedented levels that have shaken their sense of security. “No previous flood has ever reached this level, and now I can see what the situation is like,” Ali reflected, unsure of what to expect in the future after experiencing such devastation.

Among those deeply affected was Bijma Wati, a widow battling diabetes while caring for her ill son, who found herself overwhelmed by the fear of the situation. “I haven’t slept. I’m a diabetic patient and have high blood pressure. It was a scary experience,” she shared, highlighting the emotional and physical toll the flooding has taken on vulnerable individuals.

The aftermath has left many residents without essential belongings, and some have gone without a proper meal since the flood struck. In response to the damage, community members have come together, with men spending the morning working to repair water pipes that were destroyed by the flooding.

Despite the devastation, the resilience exhibited by the Nabua community shines through as they unite to support one another in the recovery efforts. The experience has served as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of community solidarity during times of crisis.
