President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has given his support to a significant initiative funded by the World Bank, aimed at enhancing sustainable tourism development in Vanua Levu. This initiative, called the Na Vualiku Project, was presented to the President during a courtesy visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka at State House.

The Na Vualiku Project seeks to upgrade infrastructure, increase private sector involvement, and promote environmental sustainability at key tourism sites in the Northern Division. Key investments will focus on building resilient infrastructure, creating nature-based attractions, and enhancing waste and sewage systems, all while empowering Fijian women within the tourism industry.

Implementation of the project will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, with collaborative support from the Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Airports Limited, and the Savusavu Town Council. The President expressed his endorsement of the project during the briefing and emphasized the collaborative effort necessary for its success.

Moreover, the importance of the Na Vualiku Project is underscored by the World Bank’s commitment of $400 million over the next ten years, which aims to uplift the Northern Division economically. Previous discussions have highlighted that this funding represents not just a monetary investment, but a strategic partnership aiming to transform Vanua Levu into a thriving tourism hub. This transformation is anticipated to create numerous employment opportunities, invigorate local businesses, and enhance the quality of life for the local populace.

As the region is currently underutilized in terms of tourism—attracting only about four percent of visitors compared to other popular destinations—this initiative promises significant potential for growth. The government’s focus on sustainable tourism in Northern Fiji signifies a hopeful step towards economic empowerment for the communities involved.
