According to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia, many people lack knowledge on how to properly care for their ears. During a recent two-day screening session at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he examined 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80 years old.

Mr. Mohammed noted that many patients exhibited symptoms of ear mismanagement, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals due to earwax, and discharge. He expressed concern, stating that there is currently no audiometrist available in the northern region, forcing patients who require medical assistance to travel to Suva. Mr. Mohammed urged the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to consider sending an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa on a monthly basis to improve access to care.

During his visit, he encountered a female patient with hearing impairment who felt despondent in the clinic. Throughout the treatment process, Mr. Mohammed became emotional as he witnessed the patient’s joy upon hearing sounds clearly with the help of a hearing aid. He also attended to students from Labasa School for Special Education, some of whom needed urgent medical attention and hearing aids.

Reflecting on his experiences, he conveyed a desire for more initiatives similar to past collaborations with the Lions Club Labasa, which organized medical services prior to the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of raising funds to support children requiring overseas treatment, highlighting the critical need for treatment among those who are unable to hear and live without a normal communicative experience.

Mr. Mohammed concluded by reiterating the vital role ears play in communication and the necessity for increased awareness surrounding ear health in the community.

This article underscores the critical need for improved ear health services in Labasa and the emotional impact of restoring hearing to those who have suffered from impairments. By fostering greater awareness and access to treatment, there is hope for individuals to regain their ability to communicate and live fulfilling lives.
