The importance of ear care often goes overlooked, according to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist with Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he provided support to 40 patients, ranging from a four-year-old to an 80-year-old.
Mohammed highlighted that many individuals he encountered were suffering from various ear issues, including perforated ear drums, ear infections, wax blockages, and scar tissue, often exacerbated by improper ear cleaning practices. He expressed concern that patients in the northern regions lack adequate access to audiometric care, as there are no audiometrists available locally, forcing individuals to travel to the capital, Suva, for medical help.
In a moving instance, he recounted the experience of a female patient with hearing impairment who felt despondent until she received a hearing aid, which allowed her to hear clearly for the first time. Her emotional response reflected the profound impact that proper ear care can have on individuals’ lives. Mohammed also noted the presence of students with hearing difficulties from the Labasa School for Special Education, emphasizing the urgent need for medical assistance and hearing aids for many.
Having previously organized similar initiatives with the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic, Mohammed hopes for more cooperative efforts, including fundraising for children who need overseas medical treatment. He stressed the essential role ears play in daily communication and the challenges faced by those who cannot hear.
As awareness grows regarding ear health, it is crucial for communities to come together to support those in need of treatment. The goal is not only to provide immediate assistance but also to create long-term solutions for better ear healthcare accessibility. This initiative encapsulates a compassionate approach that holds the potential for significant positive change in the lives of many in the region.
