Unlocking Potential: The Power of Literacy Through Art

Integrating literacy skills with artistic expression can enable children to uncover their interests, enhance their self-esteem, and positively influence their lives and their communities. This was emphasized by Selina Kuruleca, the permanent secretary of the Education Ministry, during her address as the chief guest at the Literacy Arts Awareness Week held at CMF Primary School.

The event, themed “Unlocking Limitless Potential through Literacy Art,” showcased exhibitions from students representing various countries around the globe. Kuruleca highlighted that art is an effective medium for unlocking vast potential for both individuals and communities.

She stated that literacy and numeracy are fundamental skills that form the foundation of education, crucial for the advancement of individuals and society at large. These skills, she noted, provide access to numerous opportunities, with approximately 38,500 students in Years 5 and 7 being assessed annually through the Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LANA).

Kuruleca encouraged parents and guardians to take an active role in monitoring their children’s academic progress by supervising homework, engaging in Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and participating in school-organized events.
