The government has initiated reforms for civil servants with support from the Australian government. This was disclosed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad in Nadi while addressing a question from Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry chair, Dr. Ram Raju, regarding wage increases for civil servants.

Dr. Raju inquired about the government’s plans to enhance activities for civil servants in light of the wage increases. In response, Prasad emphasized the importance of ensuring civil servants’ welfare as a key factor in the equation.

Prasad pointed out that large budgets allocated to various ministries often went unutilized. He cited environmental issues, such as water supply for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, indicating that ministries like public works and lands must plan and implement projects more systematically.

He specifically mentioned the health ministry, which received a substantial budget last year. However, Prasad observed that the budget utilization was inadequate, resulting in delays in medical supplies and services not being delivered as expected.

The finance minister stated that the government expects civil servants, including permanent secretaries and ministers, to ensure efficient delivery of services according to allocated budgets.

Prasad also revealed plans to establish a training institute for the civil service to enhance their efficiency and service delivery.
