Unlocking Potential: Fiji National University Introduces Exciting Martial Arts Course

Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education has introduced the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at its Nasinu Campus.

This Certificate Programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and hands-on proficiency in various Martial Arts disciplines. The training includes Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, aiming to promote a holistic approach to Martial Arts education. Participants will have the opportunity to improve their physical fitness, mental resilience, spiritual awareness, and self-defence skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, a distinguished guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College, emphasized that Martial Arts transcends mere physical exercise; it is a path to personal transformation. He stated, “We are not merely launching a programme today, but rather, we are unveiling new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental toughness, and personal development.”

He added that Martial Arts is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or physical capacity. Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would create a safe and supportive space for each student to learn at their individual pace and foster an environment of respect and growth.

What distinguishes this programme, according to Lingam, is not only the technical skills imparted but also the invaluable life lessons that accompany them. He noted that Martial Arts teaches practitioners to maintain composure during adversity, tackle challenges with focus, and embrace a mindset dedicated to continuous self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher Education, highlighted that this initiative represents a significant advance in the University’s ongoing commitment to providing diverse educational offerings tailored to students’ interests and ambitions. He remarked, “This short course will give students an in-depth understanding of various Martial Arts techniques, with guidance from seasoned instructors to help them develop essential skills and confidence.”

Suraj Singh, the Head of the Secondary and Sports Education Department, also spoke about the initiative’s relevance in today’s complex society, stating, “The values and skills learned through martial arts are increasingly important.” Singh explained that this six-week short course aims to equip participants with practical proficiency across a range of martial arts, enhancing their overall well-being, fitness, and self-defence abilities.

“Martial Arts goes beyond combat techniques; it reshapes individuals’ thinking, helping them manage challenging situations while maintaining poise, humility, and a positive mindset,” Singh concluded.

Captain Tevita Korovou, who has a military background, will serve as the programme instructor.
