The recent dialogue forum titled “Development in Indonesia: Lessons Learned from Papua and for the Pacific” took place in Suva earlier this month, showcasing the progress made in the Indonesian province of Papua. The event aimed not only to promote local culture but also to highlight significant advancements that have occurred in this easternmost region of the Indonesian archipelago.

Prominent figures from Papua shared their insights, including Rev. Alberth Yoku, Pascal Norotouw, and Lenis Kogoya, who discussed various aspects of social and economic growth in the area. The forum attracted a diverse audience comprising church leaders, Fijian students, government officials, and representatives from various NGOs, all engaged in meaningful discussions about development strategies.

A video presentation at the event highlighted Papua’s natural beauty and its cultural similarities to Fiji, setting the stage for an interactive dialogue. The Indonesian Ambassador to Fiji, Mr. Dupito Simamora, welcomed attendees and encouraged thought-provoking discussions on sustainable development models that could benefit both Papua and Fiji.

Sokovoli Ordovakavula, President of the Indonesia Scholarship Fiji Alumni, moderated the discussions, emphasizing shared challenges in social and economic development between Papua and Fiji. The forum not only explored how initiatives from Papua could inform Fijian development plans but also considered mutual benefits from Fiji’s unique development experiences.

Rev. Yoku discussed the advancements made under the Special Autonomy Framework, which accommodates traditional norms and promotes interfaith tolerance, thereby facilitating political and economic participation, education, and health initiatives. Meanwhile, Pascal Norotouw stressed the essential role of youth in Papua’s development, particularly through educational initiatives that foster understanding and harmony among the region’s diverse communities.

Dr. Lenis Kogoya highlighted the contributions of grassroots communities in bolstering communication between citizens and government, advocating for collaborative efforts in education and development between Papua and the broader Pacific Islands.

The forum concluded with an engaging Q&A session that reflected the participants’ enthusiasm for learning from Papua’s development journey. Closing remarks from Amit Prakash, a lecturer from The University of Fiji, emphasized the need for cross-regional trade initiatives, underscoring the connected aspirations of Melanesian nations.

In a gesture of goodwill, Ambassador Simamora presented $175,642 worth of educational equipment to QVS Principal, Mr. Timoci Vosailagi, reinforcing the commitment to fostering education and youth empowerment in the region.

This event not only served as a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding but also highlighted the potential for collaboration between Papua and Fiji, bringing hope for enhanced social and economic development in both regions. Overall, such gatherings can inspire greater cooperation and shared knowledge, setting a positive precedent for future endeavors in the Pacific.
