The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced research capabilities in the Pacific Islands, as well as globally, to better address climate finance and adaptation initiatives. Speaking at the conclusion of the Global Development Conference 2024 at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, he highlighted the vital role of research in informing policies and challenging conventional approaches to climate change.
Mr. Prasad pointed out that current times are fraught with uncertainty, where scientific foundations are increasingly undermined by disruptions and a growing anti-science sentiment, further intensified by advances in technology. He noted the heightened demand for expertise within the research community, urging collaboration to reaffirm the importance of evidence-based research and science.
Key to tackling climate change, he stated, is effective communication of research findings to a public that may be feeling skeptical. He called on the Global Development Network community to rise to this challenge and engage with communities meaningfully.
Notably, he observed that the effects of climate change are acutely felt in the Pacific region and urged researchers to concentrate on oceanic studies, sustainable blue economies, and the preservation of the ocean’s essential contributions to humanity.
The Deputy Prime Minister asserted that building resilience against climate impacts is essential, not merely an additional consideration, and acknowledged the growing strain on public finances in light of multiple conflicting priorities amid rising debt levels.
In summary, the focus on enhancing research capabilities is crucial for informed action against climate change, especially for small Pacific nations. This call to action not only signifies a step towards better climate adaptation strategies but also encourages a collective effort to strengthen the fabric of scientific understanding in the face of present-day challenges.
As we continue to navigate the uncertainties of climate change, there is hope in the commitment to collaborate, innovate, and prioritize research that paves the way for a sustainable future.
