Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has emphasized the crucial link between amateur and professional boxing in his upcoming book, “Maker of Champions.” Set to be launched on Saturday, Ramos reflects on the invaluable contributions of Hector Hatch, a former Olympian and a prominent figure in Fiji’s amateur boxing scene.
Ramos describes Hatch as a mentor, recalling his own beginnings in 1962 at the Suva Youth Centre, where he trained under Hatch during weekly amateur competitions at the PWD Gym. The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA), established in 1953, played a key role in fostering boxing talent in the country, with Hatch serving in various capacities until his retirement in 1992. His era saw outstanding boxers emerge, including bronze medalists at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, such as Moses Evans and Holgar Johansen, as well as Sani Fine, who won gold in the light heavyweight division at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
Ramos attributes his success in building a pool of professional boxers to Hatch’s dedicated leadership. He believes that Hatch’s legacy as an exceptional trainer and administrator was instrumental in keeping amateur boxing at the forefront of Fiji’s sports culture. Ramos calls for a revival of similar dedication in amateur boxing to help restore public confidence in the sport.
Acknowledging the successful transition of amateur boxers to professional ranks, Ramos lists several names like Ravuama Roko and Alipate Korovou who have made significant strides in their careers.
With the launch of “Maker of Champions” on the horizon, Ramos aims to inspire a new generation of boxers, highlighting the importance of grassroots training and commitment to the sport. The future of boxing in Fiji could be very promising if the contributions of dedicated mentors like Hatch are recognized and built upon.
This article shines light on the essential role of amateur boxing in the development of professional talent, suggesting an optimistic outlook for the sport’s future in Fiji if the right support systems are put in place.
