Sanaila Duono, a 26-year-old player from Nalidi, Ra, recently expressed his ambition to wear the national sevens jersey, emphasizing that there is no age limit to represent the country’s colors. He participated in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, where he played for the PWD Bure team, which competes in the Tier Two division.
Duono highlighted the Nataleira 7s as an excellent opportunity for teams from rural areas to showcase their talents. He stated, “This team represents the 14 provinces, and the door is always open for anyone to join.” He worked to assemble a diverse squad, recruiting players from Naitaisiri, Dawasamu in Tailevu, and his village, demonstrating his commitment to building a unified team.
Despite some challenges, such as training during the festive season when many players were with their families, Duono is optimistic about the potential of his teammates. He believes that with the right discipline and communication, they could eventually represent the national team.
Duono also expressed gratitude to the supporters and stakeholders who contribute to the team’s logistics, including food and transportation. Although PWD faced a setback in their first match against Gau Kacau, losing 7-19, Duono is focused on improving his fitness and preparation. He noted the importance of learning from their experiences and is inspired by local rugby legends like Iliesa Nadai, a former national sevens representative.
This is a powerful reminder of the communal spirit in sports and the importance of nurturing local talent. By emphasizing collaboration and support, Duono and his team highlight the potential for athletes from rural areas to shine on national and international stages. Their determination and willingness to overcome challenges are commendable, painting a hopeful picture for the future of rugby in their community.
