As Papua New Guinea (PNG) commemorates 50 years of independence, Prime Minister James Marape has highlighted the critical need for enhanced solidarity among Pacific nations amid rising global geopolitical tensions. Prior to the forthcoming Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting, which will notably exclude Taiwan, Marape spoke to PMN News, advocating for unity amongst Pacific states.

“Togetherness is security and empowerment,” remarked Marape, emphasizing that, although these nations may appear limited in land size and population, they collectively represent significant oceanic territories rich in resources.

Marape noted that PNG has formally communicated with the Solomon Islands, the host of the upcoming PIF Leaders Meeting, to underscore the importance of adhering to the Forum’s original framework and collaborative ethos.

He also acknowledged the longstanding relationship with New Zealand, marked recently by Prime Minister Chris Luxon’s visit. This visit underscored the deep historical ties and mutual support between New Zealand and PNG, encapsulated in Luxon’s significant address at PNG’s Parliament, where he became the first New Zealand Prime Minister to do so.

Reflecting on PNG’s diverse cultural landscape, Marape proudly stated, “We are the most diverse nation on earth,” with over 800 languages and around 1,000 cultural groups coexisting, signifying a major achievement in national unity and democratic resilience. He expressed ambitions for PNG to emerge as an equal partner alongside Australia and New Zealand in regional matters, reinforcing PNG’s role in fostering stability and shared prosperity in the Pacific region.

The focus on cooperation and solidarity amongst nations in the Pacific is particularly pertinent given recent collaborative efforts showcased in PNG’s relationships with both Solomon Islands and New Zealand. These discussions have centered on economic partnerships, shared security concerns, and cultural exchanges, further highlighting the positive trajectory of their interrelationships.

As nations come together during this historic juncture, there is a shared sense of optimism for a cooperative Pacific community that prioritizes mutual support and resilience, paving the way for brighter prospects in regional governance and cooperation.
