The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has reversed an earlier decision and approved the permit for a religious event scheduled in Suva tomorrow, specifically the Hindu Unity gathering. Despite the event not requiring a permit since it is not being held in a public area, the organisers have been commended for their proactive approach in seeking the necessary permissions.

Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged their efforts as a sign of willingness to work together with law enforcement, adhering to the Public Order Act. Given the anticipated number of attendees, police have requested the organisers to assist in maintaining a secure environment during the event to prevent any disruptions. They have also warned that the organisers will be held accountable for any issues that may arise.

This decision comes in the wake of heightened security concerns due to recent incidents, such as vandalism at the Samabula Shiv Mandir, which have raised awareness about the need for improved safety in religious spaces. The Fiji Police Force is actively collaborating with religious leaders to develop enhanced security protocols, reinforcing the importance of protecting sacred sites across all faiths.

While the approval of the event permit addresses immediate concerns, it also embodies a larger commitment to promoting community safety and respect among diverse religious groups in Fiji. As various faith communities work together, there is hope that such instances can foster unity and dialogue to ensure a peaceful coexistence within the multicultural landscape of Fiji. The proactive measures being taken play a significant role in safeguarding the country’s rich cultural and religious diversity.
