The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has reiterated his strong endorsement of the term “Fijian” as a universal identity for all citizens, in alignment with the principles outlined in the 2013 Constitution. During a recent workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion in Fiji, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of unity among all Fijians, irrespective of their diverse backgrounds.
Mr. Tikoduadua stated, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians.” This declaration reflects his dedication to fostering a united national identity and his resolve to combat any divisions that might arise from ethnicity or other differentiating factors.
He further articulated, “No label, difference, or background should divide us. Our diversity enriches us; it is what makes our nation strong, vibrant, and resilient.” This highlights his belief that embracing diversity is crucial for national strength and cohesion.
According to the Minister, recognizing shared identities can pave the way for a future where every Fijian has the opportunity to succeed and actively participate in society. He noted, “I am an iTaukei, Christian, Catholic—but, I will not claim to own ‘Fijian’ unless it belongs to all of us.”
Mr. Tikoduadua also acknowledged the collaborative efforts with international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and UN Women, to promote the values of unity, respect, and inclusion. He termed this partnership as a testament to their collective commitment to fostering a cohesive and resilient society.
In summary, Tikoduadua’s message is one of hope and unity as he encourages all citizens to stand together as one nation, reinforcing the idea that Fiji’s strength lies in its diversity and the shared identity of being Fijian. His leadership aims to inspire a collective effort towards building a peaceful and inclusive society for all. This vision of unity is a hopeful reminder of the power of inclusivity in shaping a harmonious future for Fiji.
