Today marks a significant occasion on the Hindu calendar as individuals around the globe come together to celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. This annual event sees millions of Hindus, including many in Fiji, engage in traditions that embody the spirit and values of this festive season.

In northern India, a remarkable celebration took place on the banks of the Saryu River, where a record-breaking 2.51 million oil lamps were lit at dusk. This event, recognized by a Guinness World Record team, surpassed last year’s count of 2.2 million. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was presented with a certificate acknowledging this historic achievement, with drone cameras capturing every moment of this beautiful spectacle.

Fijians are well aware of the significance of this day for their Hindu neighbors, having grown up alongside them and sharing in their traditions. While Fiji is home to a diverse population that includes various ethnicities and religions, this diversity is celebrated rather than divisive. The culture of appreciating and respecting one another’s religious events is a testament to the unity and harmony within the nation.

Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, encouraging families and communities to come together in joyful celebration. It serves as a reminder to reflect on personal lives, shed negativity, and embrace positive values. This festival is more than just a celebration; it is an invitation to better oneself and cultivate a brighter future collectively.

As the festivities unfold with the widespread use of lights and fireworks, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents.

On behalf of The Fiji Times, we extend our warmest wishes to all celebrating—may the joy of Diwali fill your homes and hearts with happiness!

This celebration not only provides an opportunity for reflection for those observing the holiday but also encourages understanding and appreciation among different communities. The spirit of Diwali can serve as a beacon of hope for unity and positivity in a diverse society.
