The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has expressed his strong endorsement of the term ‘Fijian’ to describe all citizens, aligning with the principles outlined in the 2013 Constitution. During a recent workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion in Fiji, he emphasized the importance of unity among all Fijians, irrespective of their backgrounds.

Mr. Tikoduadua stated, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians,” reinforcing the notion of a collective national identity. He firmly opposed any movements intending to create divisions based on ethnicity or other differences, underscoring that no distinctions should undermine national unity.

He articulated that diversity should be celebrated as a strength that enriches Fiji and contributes to its vibrancy and resilience. “This is our shared identity, and this commitment to unity is at the very heart of what I stand for as a leader in this nation,” he stressed.

Reflecting on his own identity as an iTaukei, Christian, and Catholic, Mr. Tikoduadua remarked that he would not lay claim to ‘Fijian’ as a title unless it represented and included everyone. He believes that embracing equality and respecting different perspectives can pave the way for a future where all Fijians can thrive and play an active role in society.

Mr. Tikoduadua also highlighted the collaborative efforts with various organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and UN Women, which stand as a testament to the shared commitment to unity, respect, and inclusivity. He expressed optimism that these partnerships will enable Fiji to navigate its diverse cultural landscape and advance toward a cohesive society that values every individual as part of the Fijian family.

This message of unity and inclusion resonates widely, offering hope for a future where every citizen can participate fully in national life and contribute to building a stronger Fiji together.

Summary: Minister Pio Tikoduadua reaffirms support for the term ‘Fijian’ for all citizens, emphasizing national unity and diversity in a workshop focused on social cohesion. He opposes ethnic divisions and advocates for a collective identity while fostering partnerships to strengthen social fabric and civic participation in Fiji.
