Unity Fiji has addressed the public regarding its stance on potential collaborations with other political parties in advance of the 2026 General Election. According to Party Leader Savenaca Narube, there have been no discussions about forming alliances with other parties for this election cycle.
Narube did emphasize, however, that the topic of partnerships is one worth considering, as it has been a point of interest for Unity Fiji in previous elections. Currently, Unity Fiji is in discussions with the Fiji Labour Party regarding a possible partnership for the upcoming local government elections. A technical team from both parties has made progress towards drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), although it has yet to be finalized.
Narube highlighted the benefits of this collaboration, noting that working together could enhance their financial resources and improve the quality of candidates. Once the MOU is completed and both parties agree on its terms, it will be submitted to Unity Fiji’s board for approval before being presented at their Annual General Meeting.
Additionally, Narube criticized the current government for not fulfilling its commitment to hold local government elections as promised, alleging that the government had assured elections by 2023 but has since failed to deliver. He expressed skepticism about whether these elections will ever occur, questioning the government’s initial commitment to restoring democracy at all levels.
This situation presents an opportunity for Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party to strengthen their political strategies ahead of local elections, which could positively influence the governance landscape in Fiji. By pooling resources and working collaboratively, these parties may improve their chances of success and foster a more democratic process.
Summary: Unity Fiji has stated that there are no plans for collaboration with other political parties for the 2026 General Election, but they are discussing a partnership with the Fiji Labour Party for local government elections. Savenaca Narube criticized the government for failing to hold promised elections and expressed concerns about the future of local governance.
