Unity Fiji’s Narube Urges Voters to Reject Power-Hungry Politicians

The leader of the Unity Fiji Party and former Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor, Savenaca Narube, has urged the government to address its internal issues. He expressed that rumors regarding factions within the government or Cabinet forming a new political party would not resolve the leadership and economic challenges facing the nation.

Narube’s comments were prompted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s disclosure about factions in his party, including some Cabinet members, planning to break away by 2026. He emphasized that the existence of political parties is irrelevant; instead, the credibility of their leadership is crucial. Narube criticized politicians who prioritize their own power over public service, likening them to individuals merely changing their appearance without altering their agendas.

He pointed out the historical trend of party-switching, particularly referencing the leader of the People’s Alliance party, suggesting that political leaders lacking principles and solely seeking personal gain often perpetuate this cycle.

Narube remarked on the significant loss of trust in politicians who have led Fiji over the past twenty years and called on voters to be wary of seasoned politicians trying to present themselves in a new light. He emphasized the importance of exercising democratic rights in the upcoming 2026 elections to remove untrustworthy leaders.

He urged voters to opt for a leader capable of driving economic transformation, reducing poverty, controlling the cost of living, uniting all ethnic groups, ensuring safety, and combating corruption, particularly in high offices. A trustworthy leader, he stressed, is essential for Fiji’s future.
