Unity Fiji has emphasized that there are currently no plans to collaborate with any other political party ahead of the 2026 General Election. Party Leader Savenaca Narube confirmed this information during an interview with FijiLive. Narube acknowledged that exploring potential partnerships is an idea worth considering, as the party has previously advocated for such collaborations in past elections.

However, Narube did mention that discussions are ongoing between Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party regarding a potential partnership for the local government elections. A technical team from both parties is in the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which is yet to be finalized. He noted that joining forces for these elections could provide significant benefits, such as combined financial resources and improved candidate quality.

Narube explained that once the MOU is ready and both parties reach an agreement, it will be presented for approval at their respective board meetings prior to being brought forth at the party’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). Additionally, he criticized the Government for failing to hold local government elections as promised, expressing concern over the uncertain future of these elections. He pointed out the government’s pledge to conduct elections by 2023 and questioned the reasons behind the apparent waning commitment to restoring democracy at all levels of governance.

In a hopeful note, the dialogue between Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party may pave the way for a more collaborative approach to governance, potentially leading to stronger candidates and enhanced democratic processes. It highlights an ongoing commitment to political engagement, which can lead to meaningful change in the community.

This situation also serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping electoral promises and the need for transparency in government actions, granting citizens a voice in their governance.
