Unity Fiji has made it clear that there are currently no plans to collaborate with any other political party in preparation for the 2026 General Election. This statement comes from Party Leader Savenaca Narube in an interview with FijiLive.
Narube acknowledged that while exploring partnerships is a topic worth considering and has been previously encouraged by the party during past elections, there are ongoing discussions specifically with the Fiji Labour Party regarding a potential alliance for local government elections. A technical team from both parties is in the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which still needs to be finalized.
He explained that collaborating for local government elections could provide significant benefits, such as combining financial resources and enhancing the quality of candidates. Once the agreement is settled and both parties consent, the MOU will be presented at a board meeting for approval before being discussed at the party’s Annual General Meeting.
On another note, Narube criticized the current government for failing to hold local government elections as previously promised. He expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for these elections, questioning the government’s commitment to restoring democracy at all levels.
This situation highlights the ongoing political dialogue in Fiji and the continuing quest for local governance reform. As discussions progress, there is hope that such collaborations could strengthen democratic processes and improve governance in local communities.
