Unity Fiji Objects to Rival Party's Plan to Use 'People First' By-Line

Unity Fiji Objects to Rival Party’s Plan to Use ‘People First’ By-Line

Unity Fiji has voiced its objections regarding the registration of a new political party that it claims is appropriating its by-line, “People First.” This proposed party, which comprises former members of Fiji First, has applied to adopt the phrase as its official name.

Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji, expressed his discontent over this situation. He revealed that he had previously communicated with the new party, requesting that they refrain from using Unity Fiji’s established by-line. Narube criticized the new party for disregarding those requests, suggesting that their actions reflect a broader trend of dismissing democratic principles originated from their former party.

“The voters must be extremely wary of a political party who starts off by stealing our by-line,” Narube cautioned. He continued to question the originality and creativity of a party that relies on the work of others rather than developing its own identity.

Narube announced that Unity Fiji intends to formally submit objections to the Fiji Elections Office (FEO), referencing the fact that they have been using the by-line since 2017. He urged the FEO to take a stand against the new party’s request, emphasizing the importance of originality in political branding.

This dispute highlights the significance of political identity in Fiji and the potential impact on voter perceptions. As this situation develops, it raises vital questions about the establishment of new political entities and their adherence to principles of originality and respect in the political landscape.
