Unity Fiji has made it clear that there are currently no discussions regarding collaborations with other political parties as the 2026 General Election approaches. This assurance was provided by Party Leader Savenaca Narube in an interview with FijiLive.
While Narube expressed that the idea of forming alliances is an important topic that Unity Fiji has historically advocated for in previous elections, he did confirm that there are ongoing discussions between Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party regarding a potential partnership for the upcoming local government elections.
According to Narube, a technical team from both parties is in the process of drafting a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which has not yet been finalized. He highlighted the benefits of such a collaboration, noting that it could enhance their financial resources and improve the quality of candidates presented.
Once the MOU is complete and both parties reach an agreement, it will be submitted for approval during their board meeting before being presented at the annual general meeting.
Narube also criticized the Government for its failure to conduct local government elections as previously promised, expressing uncertainty about the Government’s commitment to restoring democracy at all levels. He noted, “We are not sure if local government elections will ever happen,” questioning the lack of follow-through on their commitment to democratic processes.
This situation reveals the complexity of political landscapes as parties navigate potential partnerships while calling for accountability from those in power. It underscores the importance of local governance and the need for democratic processes to be upheld in Fiji. As the political climate develops, there remains hope that all parties will prioritize the voices of their constituents and work toward a collaborative approach that fosters democratic engagement.
