Unity and Integrity: A New Chapter for Fiji’s Corrections Service

Former Methodist Church Chaplain at the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Reverend Kinijoji Serutawake, delivered a powerful sermon during the FCS inaugural church parade for 2025 at the Centenary Church in Suva, urging officers to adopt values of unity, humility, kindness, and respect for lawful authority in their work. His message resonated strongly as he highlighted the dangers of spiritual underdevelopment in the workplace, emphasizing the importance of placing faith at the center of their duties amid worldly distractions.

Reverend Serutawake’s return to the pulpit comes after his removal in January by the suspended Corrections Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa. However, recent gestures towards reconciliation were initiated by Acting Corrections Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, who sought forgiveness from the Methodist Church and Reverend Serutawake himself, reflecting a desire to mend relationships and foster a collaborative environment.

In his address, Reverend Serutawake stressed that true leadership is built on honesty, integrity, and spiritual wisdom, which can lead to improved individual performance and a more effective organization. His call for spiritual development was echoed by Acting Commissioner Naucukidi, who reminded the officers of the necessity of teamwork and a renewed commitment to higher standards as the FCS aims to rebuild its image following recent controversies.

The church parade served as a meaningful platform for FCS officers to reflect on their roles, recommitting to core values that drive the institution forward. Naucukidi expressed gratitude to the officers for their unwavering dedication and hard work, emphasizing that they must work together to earn public trust.

This strong collaborative spirit and commitment to spiritual and professional growth signal a hopeful direction for the future of corrections in Fiji, as both leadership and staff align their efforts toward a more rehabilitative and supportive correctional environment.

The overarching message of unity and integrity within the FCS reflects a positive trajectory amidst past challenges, with a vision for reform that is focused on both officer welfare and the betterment of inmate rehabilitation practices.
