Unity and Heritage: Celebrating Fiji’s Chinese Community

The Chinese community has played a crucial role in Fiji’s multicultural landscape, making significant contributions to the nation’s progress and enhancing its cultural heritage. This was emphasized by His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, President of the Republic of Fiji, during the China National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival 2024 celebration in Suva.

President Katonivere highlighted that the traditions, values, and dedication of the Chinese community have shaped Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive nation it is known as today. He noted that the Moon Festival serves as a reminder of essential values that unite people—veiwekani (family), unity, and veilomani (love for one another).

“As we gather today, we are reminded of the significance of these values in our lives and within our community. The spirit of the festival represents harmony and completeness, showcasing the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji,” he stated.

This celebration also coincided with initiatives from the Coalition Government aimed at enhancing people-to-people connections between Fiji and China, marking a pioneering effort for any Pacific Island nation.
