Unity and Empowerment Shine at Nasinu Festival 2023

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad underscored the importance of festivals in uniting diverse communities and fostering relationships that empower individuals to pursue collective goals. His remarks were made at the Nasinu Festival – Girmit Night (Bollywood Night).

He emphasized that successful collaborations not only enhance community spirit but also solidify relationships and underscore the value of working together. Professor Prasad extended his appreciation to the Nasinu Festival Charitable Trust Fund and the organizing team for revitalizing the festival after a five-year break.

He expressed optimism for the festival’s growth over the years, hoping it will continue to be a significant event for the Nasinu community. Girmit Night, he noted, remains a favorite cultural event in the nation, attracting individuals from various ethnic backgrounds for an evening of entertainment and music.

The Nasinu Festival aims to honor the area’s rich cultural heritage and strengthen community bonds by bringing people together. Professor Prasad also announced that next month, the Coalition Government will introduce a new National Development Plan focused on empowering individuals to foster growth.

The new plan seeks to unify the people of Fiji and address the rapid urbanization of regions like Nasinu, which is becoming a significant metropolitan area. Currently, 58% of the population resides in urban settings, and Professor Prasad highlighted the need for inclusive urban development that enhances livability, sustainability, and economic growth.

He acknowledged the valuable contributions of community-based, religious, and civil society organizations in strengthening local communities and promoting development. The government is committed to partnering with these groups to empower individuals and communities, which he views as foundational to a functioning democracy.
