The vanua o Lalagavesi gathered in large numbers yesterday at Somosomo Village in Taveuni to celebrate the upcoming inauguration of their paramount chief, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the President of Fiji, set for November 12, 2024. The event featured a traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony, dedicated to honoring individuals who achieve significant milestones.
During this ceremonial occasion, attendees witnessed a yaqona vakaturaga ceremony, the presentation of tabua (whale’s tooth), and other traditional gifts, culminating in a feast and a meke performance. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present along with several cabinet ministers, including Filimoni Vosarogo (Minister for Lands) and Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu (Minister for Health). Rabuka expressed pride in supporting Ratu Naiqama and recognizing his new role as Head of State.
In his speech, Ratu Naiqama urged the vanua to unite for the betterment of their community. He emphasized the pressing need to tackle social challenges, such as the spread of HIV/AIDS and drug trafficking, which have significant impacts on the health and welfare of the population.
Ratu Naiqama’s commitment to these issues reflects a continuation of his dedication to uplifting the communities he serves, following a career steeped in governance as the former Tui Cakau and Speaker of Parliament. His leadership is viewed as a beacon of hope, promising positive changes and enhanced community engagement during his presidency.
This gathering not only symbolizes a celebration of leadership but also highlights the importance of community solidarity in building a better future for Fiji. With Ratu Naiqama at the helm, many citizens look forward to a renewed focus on unity and progress within the diverse fabric of Fijian society.
